How to Increase Fuel Efficiency: 5 Helpful Tips

No matter if you’re commuting to work in the Springboro area or visiting family out of state, you can use the following tips to help get the most of our car’s fuel:

  1. Accelerate Softly: Press the gas pedal gently; the harder you press, the more fuel you’ll use. Accelerate smoothly, allowing five seconds to bring your car up to 10 mph from a standstill.
  2. Plan Ahead for Traffic: Sitting and stop-and-go traffic is not only an inefficient use of your fuel, but it also puts mechanical stress on the car’s drivetrain. Try and avoid rush hour by leaving at least 15 minutes early. You can also look for a shortcut to getting to where you need to be without any hassles.
  3. Avoid High Speeds: Using higher speeds uses more fuel. To be more fuel efficient, keep your driving speed between 55 and 65 mph (follow the speed limit).
  4. Coast to a Stop: Don’t apply your brakes constantly; look to see if there are any cars in front of you. If there aren’t any, and you need to stop, remove your foot from the gas pedal and let your car coast to a stop.
  5. Use Air Conditioning Sparingly: Using the air conditioning system increases your car’s fuel usage by up to 20%. If the air conditioning is on, use the recirculate function. Try and avoid having it on full-blast.
