What Does TPMS Mean?

Hand Holding Tire Gauge to Tire

Most new Buick and GMC vehicles come with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, but many Kettering drivers aren’t aware of it until they see the warning light come on. So, what does TPMS mean? It means there’s a pressure issue in your tires, but that could indicate a few distinct fixes. Bob Ross Buick GMC covers all things Tire Pressure Monitoring System below!

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Issues

Your tire pressure monitoring system is an automatic check on your tires as you’re driving down Springboro roads. This extremely useful technology means that you don’t have to be the one using your own gauge to constantly measure your tire pressure. The TPMS light can indicate a number of problems with your vehicle:

  • Decreased load carrying capability
  • Excessive tire wear
  • Poor traction
  • A flat tire or blowout

Some of these problems may require you to schedule service at a Bellbrook-area service center, and most can be prevented by regularly inflating your tires.

Tire Inflation Guide

Tire inflation seems like a trivial matter, but it can make all the difference. Properly-inflated tires result in the following benefits:

  • Longer tire life thanks to reduced tread movement.
  • Decreased likelihood of hydroplaning
  • Increased fuel economy thanks to a reduced rolling resistance

So, how can you know that you’re properly inflating your tires? Here are some step-by-step guidelines:

  • Find an air machine at a local gas station and park on a level surface next to it.
  • Remove the caps from your tire’s valve stems then press your gauge into the stem.
  • Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended psi ratings on your tires (many of these ratings will also be marked on the tires themselves).
  • If too high, press the gauge up and you’ll hear air leak out. If it’s too low, use the air hose on the machine and add air by pressing down on the valve stem.
  • Don’t overfill your tire!
  • Replace the valves and you’re good to go!
